Case Study: Condensation & Mould Treatment at Robert Graham 1874 Whisky & Cigars – Glasgow City Centre
Client Background
Robert Graham 1874, a well established whisky and cigar retailer located in the heart of Glasgow City Centre, takes pride in offering premium products in a refined retail environment. Central to their operation is a climate controlled humidor, essential for storing cigars at precise humidity levels.
Over recent months, the team noticed recurring black spotted mould formations within the humidor, particularly along the lower walls. Despite ongoing cleaning by staff, the problem persisted posing risks to both product preservation and the store’s reputation for excellence.
Initial Assessment
Upon our professional survey, it became clear that the issue was not due to faulty humidity controls, as initially suspected. A deeper inspection uncovered a crack in the window hidden at the back wall which was the source of the problem.
- Though not large enough to create strong drafts, the crack allowed cold air to infiltrate the humidor.
- When this cold air met the warm, humid air within the humidor, it created ideal conditions for condensation.
- Over time, this process caused vapour to convert back into liquid water, settling onto the lower wall areas.
- The resulting damp conditions eventually triggered the formation of black spotted mould, particularly around the shelving units and affected plasterwork.

Solution
We carried out a full professional mould remediation and insulation upgrade, which included:
- Chemical Mould Treatment – All affected wall surfaces were treated with a specialist black mould removal chemical, designed to kill spores and prevent regrowth. Every shelving unit and display surface inside the humidor was thoroughly wiped down and disinfected, ensuring no residual spores remained.
- Thermal Coating Installation – Once dried, the affected wall areas were treated with a high performance thermal coating. This insulation product raises surface temperature by approximately 2°C, significantly reducing the chance of condensation reforming. Additionally, the coating acts as a barrier against mould reformation, offering long term protection without compromising the humidor’s internal climate.
